  • when: Friday after school through Sunday afternoon, 15-17 June 2012.
  • where: Cascade Environmental Education Centre (20 min from Dorrigo by car)
  • who: the camp is led by environmental educators and senior EYE leaders
  • how much: $160 — includes food, lodging in dorms, materials and tuition. Some financial assistance is available.

And of course there is the hidden plastic – inside what looks like a paper box of tea bags – voila! More plastic.

We have gained much appreciation towards those food outlets in town (especially Kombu and the butchers) who were willing to let people bring their own containers for their purchases. We did check with Council about this – and it is allowable for customers to bring their own containers for their food purchases, as long as they are clean and in good condition. So to those of you Challengers who have tried to do this at local food outlets and have been refused, keep on trying!

We would also like to thank those businesses who participated in the Challenge, each in their own way lessening their use of plastic packaging, and also donating lovely raffle prizes for Plastic Free April participants. The raffle prizes went to: Kombu $100 voucher – Caitlin Sherrey-Dadd, Kaboodle Outpost $50 voucher – Tali, Weave voucher – Jay Black, Alternatives Bookshop voucher – Sandy Eager, Roots Records voucher – Maxine Wilson, Alchemy spa/sauna – Frances Amaroux, No. 5 Church Street meal – Vishnu Hazell, Purple Carrot coffees – Pearl Maya, Amelia Franklin Roastery coffees – Lynda Lane, Hammond &Wheatley Emporium bag – Jason John.

Gardening as sport continues every Wednesday, with new faces getting involved all the time. We have been cooking most weeks and Olivia has put together a great little cook book from the simple recipes that we trialed… Using as many ingredients from the garden as we could get our hands on :)

We are launching Plastic Free April by having another public “PLASTIC FREEZE” in Bellingen. ALL ARE WELCOME – whether or not you are taking the Challenge. Be on either side of the main street between Church St and the Pub at 11:00 sharp on Saturday (today!). Listen for the signal of 3 car horn beeps. Whip out a sign (A4 paper size or whatever) that says “PLASTIC FREE APRIL STARTS TOMORROW!” and FREEZE for 5 minutes – until you hear 3 car horn beeps to end the freeze. AND THAT IS IT! see you there!!

The EYE “EarthCraft” camp  will be held from Sun-Tues, 15-17 April, 2012 at the beautiful Chrysalis School campus. This camp is for EYEs in Years 9 and up. REGISTRATION OPENS 1 MARCH.  Details are as follows….

what: Enjoy being out in the bush, learn new bush skills and practice old ones, learn about local environmental issues, have heaps of fun with amazing mentors and new and old friends.

when: Sunday – Tuesday, 15-17 April, 2012.

where: Chrysalis School campus, Thora

cost: $160 for the weekend,  which includes lodging in our EYE tents, all meals, tuition, and materials. (limited scholarships available – no one should miss an EYE camp due to financial hardship!)

how to register:

(1) Registration opens Thursday, 1 March, 2012

(2) On or after that date, email your name and details to info@bellingeneye.com or ring/text 0408 322 393 and leave a clear message with your name and details. (NOTE NEW PHONE NUMBER!)

(3) We have room for 30 participants – our system is first in, best dressed. We will email/ring you back to let you know if you have a place, or if you are on the waiting list. If you don’t hear anything, please email or ring again!

(4) If you have a place, you will receive a registration form to fill out. You will need to send in the rego form and finalise payment by Sunday, 1 April – or else your place may be given away.

But EYE will prevail! Just please let us know if you have any ideas or leads for funding opportunities we can apply for. In the meantime, watch this space because EYE is planning lots of stuff, money or no money!
